Design for Disassembly: Designing the Ending

Design for disassembly is defined in C4.1.1.
In practice it comes down to one question: when this product dies, can anything be got back out of it?
It prioritises three things:
1. Ease of separation: Ensuring components can be disassembled without damage.
2. Material recovery: Facilitating recycling and reuse of parts.
3. Environmental impact: Reducing waste and resource consumption.

Design for Disassembly is a key component of the circular economy, which aims to keep products and materials in use for as long as possible.

Technical challenge: a joint strong enough to survive the product's working life is, almost by definition, a joint that resists being taken apart. Durability and disassembly pull against each other.

A pair of wireless earbuds has a glued-shut casing, a lithium battery soldered to the circuit board, and a body moulded from a plastic and rubber composite. When the battery fails after two years, the earbuds are thrown away.

(a) Explain three changes that would make the earbuds designed for disassembly. (6 marks)

(b) Discuss one reason the manufacturer might resist making these changes. (2 marks)

Solution

(a) Award [1] for each change and [1] for the reason it enables disassembly, up to [6 max].

Replace the glued casing with clips or a single standard screw. [1] A glued seam must be destroyed to be opened, so the casing cannot be reopened, whereas a reversible fastening lets the earbud be opened without damage. [1]
Make the battery a plug-in module rather than soldering it. [1] The battery is the part that fails first and it is the shortest-lived component, so making the whole product disposable because of it is the central design failure here. [1]
Replace the plastic and rubber composite with a single labelled polymer, or with two parts that can be pulled apart. [1] Bonded mixed materials cannot be economically separated, so the whole body is unrecyclable even once it has been removed. [1]
