Goods Exports Are Almost Three Times the Size of Services Exports

1. World merchandise exports were worth 26.3 trillion US dollars in 2025, on UNCTAD's data insights for merchandise trade.
2. World services exports over the same year came to 9.5 trillion US dollars, on the joint UNCTAD and WTO figures released before the WTO's fourteenth Ministerial Conference in Yaoundé in March 2026.
3. Merchandise exports grew by 7.2 percent across 2025 while services exports grew by 8.2 percent, so the smaller flow is the faster one.
4. A quoted figure must identify whether it belongs to the current account or the capital and financial account because the balance of payments records them separately.

Materials Are Spread Across Three of the Five Merchandise Product Groups

1. UNCTAD splits merchandise exports into five product groups: all food items; agricultural raw materials; fuels; manufactured goods; and ores, metals, precious stones and non-monetary gold.
2. The everyday word materials spreads across three of those groups, so a materials figure means nothing until it names which groups it counts.
3. UNCTAD's State of Commodity Dependence 2025, published on 21 July 2025, calls a country commodity dependent when commodities earn more than 60 percent of its merchandise export income.
   1. 103 countries met that test on 2021 to 2023 averages, down from 106 on the 2012 to 2014 averages.

Developing Economies Do Not Export the Same Things as Each Other

1. Fuels and ores together make up about two thirds of Africa's merchandise exports, on UNCTAD's 2022 breakdown of developing economies by product group.
2. Manufactured goods make up roughly three quarters of the merchandise exports of developing Asia and Oceania in the same year.
3. South-South merchandise trade was worth 6.2 trillion US dollars in 2024, 7 percent above 2023, on UNCTAD's Handbook of Statistics 2025.
4. That was 26 percent of world merchandise trade in 2024 against 11 percent in 2000, so trade between developing economies has more than doubled its share in a quarter of a century.

Services Exports Rank Countries in a Different Order from Goods

1. The United States supplied 12.8 percent of world services exports in 2024, ahead of the United Kingdom on 7.4 percent.
2. Ireland took 5.9 percent, Germany 5.3 percent and China 5.1 percent of a world commercial services total of 8.8 trillion US dollars that year, on the US International Trade Commission's services trade dashboard.
3. India's services exports reached 387.5 billion US dollars in the financial year 2024 to 2025, 13.6 percent above the year before, on Ministry of Commerce and Industry figures published in May 2025 using Reserve Bank of India data.
   1. That exceeded India's non-petroleum merchandise exports of 374.1 billion US dollars in the same year.
4. Foreign direct investment moves along the same networks and is counted separately, because a firm buying a factory abroad acquires an asset rather than selling a good or a service.

A Loan Only Counts as Aid If Its Grant Element Clears a Threshold

1. Official development assistance is government financing to countries on the OECD Development Assistance Committee's list of recipients, with economic development and welfare as its main objective, supplied on concessional terms.
2. From 2018 reporting the headline measure has been the grant equivalent of a loan rather than the cash that moved, so the softer the terms the more of the loan counts.
3. A loan to a least developed or other low income country needs a grant element of at least 45 percent, discounted at 9 percent.
   1. The threshold falls to 15 percent for lower middle income countries at a 7 percent discount rate and to 10 percent for upper middle income countries at 6 percent.
4. Lending on harder terms is non-concessional and counts as finance rather than aid, however useful the money proves.
5. IDA lends at no or low interest to the 78 countries that qualify on income and creditworthiness, with the income cutoff at 1,365 US dollars per head in financial year 2027, while IBRD lends near market terms to middle income borrowers.

The 0.7 Percent Target Dates From 1970 and Its Denominator Has Changed

1. General Assembly resolution 2626 (XXV) of 24 October 1970, the strategy for the Second United Nations Development Decade, asked each economically advanced country to exert its best efforts to reach a minimum net amount of 0.7 percent of its gross national product at market prices by the middle of that decade.
2. The denominator was gross national product then and is gross national income now, after the 1993 revision of the national accounts.

Aid Fell by Almost a Quarter in a Single Year

1. Development Assistance Committee members supplied 174.3 billion US dollars of official development assistance in 2025, on the OECD's preliminary figures published on 9 April 2026.
2. That was 23.1 percent lower in real terms than 2024, the largest annual fall the committee has recorded.
3. The ratio to donors' combined national income dropped from 0.34 percent in 2024 to 0.26 percent in 2025.
4. United States aid fell 56.9 percent to 29.0 billion US dollars, the largest single cut inside a decline for which the five biggest providers accounted for 95.7 percent.
5. Four members stayed above 0.7 percent of national income: Norway at 1.03 percent, Luxembourg at 0.99, Sweden at 0.85 and Denmark at 0.72.

Relief, Restructuring, Suspension and Cancellation Name Four Different Things

1. Cancellation writes off part of the debt stock so that it is never repaid.
2. Restructuring changes the terms by stretching maturities or cutting interest, which may leave the amount owed unchanged in present value.
3. Suspension defers payments to a later date and reduces nothing.
4. Debt relief is the umbrella word for all three, so a relief figure carries no meaning until the initiative behind it is named.

HIPC and MDRI Cancelled Stock, While the Common Framework Restructures It

1. The Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Initiative, launched in 1996 and now working alongside the Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative, has relieved 37 countries of more than 100 billion US dollars of debt.
   1. Thirty-one of those countries are in Africa, with Somalia the most recent to reach completion point in December 2023, saving 4.5 billion US dollars in debt service.
2. The Debt Service Suspension Initiative ran from May 2020 to December 2021, covered 48 of the 73 eligible countries and suspended 12.9 billion US dollars of payments that remained owed in full.
3. The G20 Common Framework for Debt Treatments, endorsed in 2020 and agreed with the Paris Club, is open only to countries that were eligible for the suspension initiative.
4. Four countries have requested treatment, Chad first and then Ethiopia and Zambia early in 2021, with Ghana following in December 2022.

The Debt Stock and the Annual Debt Service Are Different Measures

1. The external debt stock of low- and middle-income countries reached 8.9 trillion US dollars at the end of 2024, on the World Bank's International Debt Report 2025 published on 3 December 2025.
2. Interest payments alone came to 415 billion US dollars across 2024, a record for the second year running.
3. Over 2022 to 2024 these countries paid out 741 billion US dollars more in principal and interest than they received in new external financing.

Remittances Reached 685 Billion Dollars to Low- and Middle-Income Countries in 2024

1. The World Bank put officially recorded remittances to low- and middle-income countries at 685 billion US dollars in 2024, in an estimate published on 18 December 2024.
2. Growth of 5.8 percent in 2024 followed 1.2 percent in 2023, so the flow moves in steps rather than on a steady line.
3. The balance of payments item behind the figure is personal remittances received, which counts money sent home by workers abroad rather than the number of workers.
4. A migrant stock counts people living outside their country of birth on a given date, whereas a remittance flow counts dollars received across a year.

The Totals List and the Share of GDP List Have No Country in Common

1. Ranked by total received in 2024, India led on 129 billion US dollars, followed by Mexico on 68 billion, China on 48 billion, the Philippines on 40 billion and Pakistan on 33 billion.
2. Ranked by share of national output in 2024, Tajikistan led on 45 percent of GDP, followed by Tonga on 38 percent, Nicaragua and Lebanon on 27 percent each and Samoa on 26 percent.
3. Not one country appears on both lists, because the first ranks by the size of the diaspora and the receiving economy while the second ranks by how small that economy is beside what its migrants send.

Sending 200 Dollars Still Costs More Than Twice the Target

1. Sustainable Development Goal target 10.c asks governments to reduce to less than 3 percent the transaction costs of migrant remittances and eliminate remittance corridors with costs higher than 5 percent by 2030.
2. The global average cost of sending 200 US dollars was 6.36 percent in the third quarter of 2025, on the World Bank's Remittance Prices Worldwide.
   1. Sub-Saharan Africa was the most expensive region at 8.46 percent, while the corridors into the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan were the cheapest at 5.11 percent.
3. Sending 500 US dollars cost 4.08 percent over the same quarter, because a fixed transfer fee spreads across a larger sum.
4. Thirteen corridors still cost more than 20 percent, nine of them running out of Sub-Saharan Africa.

The World Bank Calls Remittances the Premier Source of External Finance for These Countries

1. Migration and Development Brief 40, published in June 2024, records the 656 billion US dollars received in 2023 as the premier source of external finance for low- and middle-income countries, surpassing foreign direct investment and official development assistance.
2. The same brief names the United States as the largest source country, with Saudi Arabia among the leading senders, so these corridors do not all begin in Europe or North America.
3. That brief also warns that outward remittance data tends to overstate flows recorded in offshore financial centres, so the sending side is weaker evidence than the receiving side.
4. Remittances arriving alongside better school enrolment is an association rather than evidence that the money caused it, because nothing in the aggregate figures separates it from everything else that changed in the household.

Illegal Flows Are Counted by Detection Rather than Measured Directly

1. The measurable part of an illegal flow is whatever somebody found: a victim identified, a shipment seized, a case reported to a national agency.
2. An illegal-flow figure measures what an agency detected, seized or recorded, so it cannot be treated as the total amount of illegal activity.

Trafficking in Persons: Detections Up a Quarter in Three Years

1. The UNODC Global Report on Trafficking in Persons 2024, released on 11 December 2024, covers 156 countries and cases detected between 2019 and 2022.
2. Detected victims were 25 percent higher in 2022 than in 2019.
3. Children made up 38 percent of detected victims, a group whose detected numbers rose 31 percent over those three years.
4. Trafficking for forced criminality, which includes online scam work, climbed from 1 percent of detected victims in 2016 to 8 percent in 2022.
5. The UN human rights office reported on 20 February 2026 that at least 300,000 people were working in scam operations across Southeast Asia, a report that also carries Interpol's count of trafficked victims from 66 countries as of March 2025.

Wildlife: Four Thousand Species in the Seizure Records

1. The UNODC World Wildlife Crime Report 2024, launched in Vienna on 13 May 2024, found about 4,000 plant and animal species in seizures made between 2015 and 2021 across 162 countries and territories.
2. Roughly 3,250 of those species are listed in the CITES appendices, so trade in them across borders is illegal unless it carries the permits the convention requires.
3. The report concludes that wildlife trafficking overall has not been substantially reduced across two decades, with elephants and rhinoceroses the exception as poaching, seizures and market prices all fell over the past decade.
4. The report's headline measures are counts of species, seizures and countries rather than a dollar value for the trade.

Counterfeit Goods: 2.3 Percent of World Imports

1. The OECD and the European Union Intellectual Property Office, in Mapping Global Trade in Fakes 2025 published on 6 May 2025 from customs seizure data, valued the trade in counterfeit and pirated goods at 467 billion US dollars in 2021, or 2.3 percent of total global imports rather than of world trade as a whole.
2. China and Hong Kong (China) remained the leading economies of provenance for seized goods, in a trade that spans nearly 50 of the 96 product categories.
3. Postal services are now the main distribution channel, because small parcels below a customs de minimis value receive the least inspection.

Drugs: 331 Million Users and a Route That Moved

1. The UNODC World Drug Report 2026, released on 26 June 2026, estimates that 331 million people used drugs in 2024, or 6.2 percent of the world's population aged 15 to 64 against 5.2 percent a decade earlier.
2. Afghanistan's cultivation ban of 2022 cut opium production sharply, after which Myanmar's opium output passed 1,000 tonnes by 2025 without coming close to the more than 6,000 tonnes Afghanistan produced in 2022.

Illicit Financial Flows Have a UN Indicator and No Agreed Global Total

1. Sustainable Development Goal indicator 16.4.1 is the total value of inward and outward illicit financial flows in current United States dollars.
2. UNODC and UNCTAD, its joint custodian agencies, define an illicit financial flow as one illicit in origin, transfer or use, that reflects an exchange of value and that crosses country borders.
3. Their conceptual framework sorts these flows into four types.
   1. The first two are illicit tax and commercial practices, which takes in transfer mispricing between related firms, and flows from illegal markets, where the drug, wildlife and counterfeit trades appear.
   2. The other two are flows from corruption, such as bribery and the theft of public funds, and exploitation-type activities covering the proceeds of trafficking and the financing of crime and terrorism.
4. Twenty-two countries have piloted the measurement and the first official estimates were reported in 2023, which is nowhere near the coverage a world total would need.

The Figure Most Often Quoted Has No Method Attached

1. UNODC's own money laundering page puts the sum laundered worldwide in a year at 800 billion to 2 trillion US dollars, or 2 to 5 percent of global GDP, with no reference year, study or method named and with laundering rather than cross-border flow as the thing being estimated.
2. The same page adds that due to the clandestine nature of money-laundering, it is however difficult to estimate the total amount of money that goes through the laundering cycle.

The FATF Grades Countries Instead of Counting Money

1. The Financial Action Task Force is a 40-member body, with its membership of the Russian Federation suspended since 24 February 2023 and more than 200 countries and jurisdictions committed to its standards through nine associate regional bodies.
2. Countries falling short are named on one of two public lists: Jurisdictions under Increased Monitoring or High-Risk Jurisdictions subject to a Call for Action.
3. A listing judges a country's controls rather than measuring money crossing its border, so it cannot be read as a flow figure.
4. Grey listing can raise transaction costs as banks apply stronger checks, so regulation changes a flow without indicating its size.
