Artist and Craftsperson

1. The sub-theme of The Artist and the Artistic Process (2.2) shifts the focus of Unit 2 from the nature of art itself (explored in 2.1) to the person who creates it. This topic asks three interconnected questions: what distinguishes an artist from a craftsperson, whether the concept of "the artist" is culturally specific, and whether all human beings possess artistic capacity.

7. William Morris, the nineteenth-century designer and social reformer, rejected the art-craft distinction entirely. Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement argued that separating "fine art" from craft was a product of industrial capitalism that degraded both: it elevated the artist to a romantic genius while reducing the craftsperson to a mere labourer.

Non-Western Traditions and the Dissolution of the Distinction

1. This view draws on Zen Buddhist aesthetics, a Japanese philosophical tradition where simplicity and self-forgetting (putting aside your ego) are seen as the highest paths to genuine artistic achievement.
2. Here, the artist is defined not by physical skill but by the idea, the concept behind the work. This leads to a striking conclusion: if the idea is the artwork, then technical skill is not enough to make you an artist, and you do not need technical skill to be one.
3. A person who cannot draw, paint, or sculpt can be a great artist if their concepts are powerful enough, while a technically brilliant painter who merely executes others' ideas is a craftsperson, not an artist.

A calligrapher, a tattoo artist, a street muralist, and a gallery sculptor all create visual works, but their relationship to the art-craft distinction varies depending on cultural context, training, and intention.

Is the Notion of the Artist a Western Construct?

1. The IB syllabus asks: "Is the notion of 'the artist' a Western construct?" This question challenges us to examine whether the figure of the individual creative genius, so central to Western aesthetics since the Renaissance, is a universal feature of human culture or a culturally specific invention.
2. In Renaissance Europe, the artist emerged as a distinct social figure. Giorgio Vasari's Lives of the Artists (1550) established the model of the artist as an individual genius whose biography, personality, and creative struggles were as important as the works they produced.
3. This model of the artist as a heroic individual has shaped Western art history ever since. Vasari had a specific goal: by building up the myth of the artistic genius, with stories of divine inspiration, personal suffering, and eccentric personality, he turned his wealthy clients' owned artworks from simple decorated objects into precious treasures made by celebrated, named creators.
4. The 'genius artist' was, in part, a marketing innovation.
5. Before the Renaissance, most Western art was produced by anonymous workshops. Medieval cathedral builders, icon painters, and manuscript illuminators rarely signed their work.

7. In many non-Western traditions, artistic creation is understood differently. In Aboriginal Australian art, the creator is not expressing personal vision but channelling ancestral stories (the Dreamtime) that belong to the community.

9. Similarly, in the Islamic artistic tradition, geometric patterns and calligraphy are often anonymous because the beauty of the work is attributed to divine inspiration rather than individual talent. The artist's role is to serve as a channel for sacred beauty, not to express a personal vision.

Chinua Achebe, the Nigerian novelist, argued that in many African traditions, art is not a separate category of human activity but is woven into everyday life: singing, storytelling, carving, and weaving are communal practices rather than the province of specialised individuals called "artists." The Western separation of art from life is itself a cultural choice.

The Artist as Reflector or Agent of Change

1. This has a powerful implication: if art in many traditions is simply part of everyday communal life, then the question 'Who is an artist?' already assumes a Western separation between art and ordinary life that does not exist everywhere.
2. The question itself may be a product of Western culture, something invented by a particular society, rather than a genuine philosophical puzzle that applies everywhere.
3. The IB syllabus also requires engagement with the concept of the artist as a reflector of existing values or as an agent of change. In some traditions, the artist's role is to preserve and transmit cultural values (icon painters, court musicians, praise singers).
4. In others, the artist is expected to challenge conventions and push boundaries (the avant-garde, political protest art).

The avant-garde tradition (from the French word meaning 'vanguard', referring to artists who deliberately push ahead of mainstream taste) defines the artist as an agent of change: someone who breaks with tradition, challenges audiences, and opens up new ways of seeing the world. Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, and Yoko Ono all redefined what it means to be an artist by challenging existing assumptions about art itself.
6. The question may set up a false binary, a forced either/or choice that does not reflect reality. Many artists do both at once: Frida Kahlo reflected Mexican cultural identity while at the same time challenging gender norms.
7. Ai Weiwei draws on Chinese artistic traditions while using them to critique political oppression. The most significant artists often work at the intersection of tradition and innovation.
8. For IB students, the question of whether the artist is a Western construct is an opportunity to deploy cross-cultural examples and to challenge assumptions built into the Unit 2 framework itself.
9. The overarching question 'What is an artist?' may have different answers in different cultures. Recognising this is not a weakness in your argument. It is a sign of genuinely philosophical thinking, because it shows you have questioned the assumptions built into the question itself.

Are We All Born Artists?

1. The IB syllabus asks: "Are we all born artists?"
2. This question connects to the age-old nature versus nurture debate: are we shaped more by what we are born with or by how we are raised? Kant believed that genius (the rare ability to produce genuinely original art) is an inborn gift rather than something you can learn. The linguist Chomsky similarly argued that humans are born with an innate capacity for language. If creativity works the same way, perhaps every human being already has the seeds of artistic capacity inside them from birth.
3. Joseph Beuys, the German artist, famously declared that "every human being is an artist."
4. Beuys did not mean everyone literally paints or sculpts. He meant that every person has the capacity to shape their own life creatively and to contribute to what he called the social sculpture, his phrase for how society itself is shaped and reshaped by all the choices people make together. For Beuys, making art is not a specialist skill but a basic way of being human.
5. The concept of outsider art (art brut) provides powerful evidence for the universality of artistic impulse. The term was coined by Jean Dubuffet in 1945 to describe works created by people outside the mainstream art world: individuals with mental illness, self-taught visionaries, prisoners, and children.
6. Dubuffet argued that these works, uncorrupted by academic training and market pressures, represent art in its purest form.

For the central question 'Are we all born artists?', outsider art provides compelling evidence: if people with no training, no institutional support, and no awareness of the art world can produce works of astonishing power, this suggests that artistic capacity is innate rather than acquired, a human birthright, not a professional qualification.

Artists such as Henry Darger (who created a vast illustrated fantasy novel in isolation), Adolf Wölfli (who produced intricate drawings while institutionalised), and Grandma Moses (who began painting in her late seventies) demonstrate that artistic impulse can emerge without institutional support.
9. However, the category of outsider art raises its own philosophical problems. By labelling these works "outsider art," the art world simultaneously includes them and marks them as different.
10. The label can make mental illness seem romantic or exciting, treat self-taught creators as curiosities, and keep the mainstream art world in control even when it appears to celebrate those outside it.

Children, Evolution and the Debate on Universal Creativity

1. Children's art provides another test case. Young children draw, paint, sing, and tell stories spontaneously, suggesting an innate creative impulse.
2. Picasso famously said: "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up."
3. This suggests that social conditioning (discussed in 1.6.2) may suppress a natural creativity that all humans possess.
4. The evolutionary perspective supports the idea that creativity is universal. Artistic behaviour (cave painting, body decoration, musical instrument making) appears in every known human culture and dates back at least 40,000 years.
5. This suggests that the artistic impulse is not a cultural invention but a biological endowment of the human species.
6. Against this view, some argue that while all humans may have the seed of creative capacity, only some develop the discipline, skill, and vision to produce genuine art. Being an artist requires not just an impulse but sustained commitment. Aristotle called this developing a virtue (arete): the idea that excellence in any skill, including art, is not a gift but a habit built through years of practice. You may be born with potential, but you have to earn the rest.

The answer depends on whether we define the artist by the product (the work) or by the process (the conscious, intentional act of creation).

This topic completes the examination of what it means to be an artist and prepares the ground for 2.2.2 (The Artistic Process), which examines how artists create, and 2.2.3 (The Artist and Society), which explores the artist's social role and responsibilities. Together, these topics address the overarching Unit 2 question: "What is an artist?"
