They can extend belonging beyond physical location, but also exclude users, reinforce divisions and privilege certain voices.
The mechanism involves algorithms, data and networked communication. Platforms collect signals such as follows, likes, searches and group participation. Recommendation systems use these signals to suggest people, posts or communities, reducing the effort needed to join groups, especially for people with uncommon interests or identities. On Reddit, topic-specific communities and pseudonymous accounts can support participation without immediately revealing offline identity, while moderators and platform rules govern visibility and conduct.

A common misconception is that platforms simply reflect existing communities. Their design actively structures participation. Through systems thinking, intended outcomes such as engagement and connection can generate unintended consequences such as polarization or exclusion.
In an IB response, name a specific platform and community, then explain effects on at least two groups, such as users, moderators, owners and non-users. For AO3 analysis, balance benefits against risks and distinguish observed impacts from future opportunities and risks; do not merely describe platform features.
